To Bridesmaid or Not To Bridesmaid?

allie 1

One of my best friends, Allie, is getting married this weekend! I can’t believe the day is finally here – I think we texted each other every single day last December wondering if today would be the day that Raven popped the question. Kevin and I always have the best time with Allie and Raven, usually thanks to lots of cheese, wine, some serious laughs, and plenty of bathroom humor. So I have no doubt that this weekend will be amazing – wine, cheese, and all. I’m also honored to be one of Allie’s bridesmaids! This is my first time as a bridesmaid and I’m so happy to be a part of their incredible day.

That being said, one of the first decisions I made about our wedding was not to have bridesmaids. I get easily stressed out by other people’s drama and way too consumed about everyone’s opinion. Not that I don’t value other’s opinions, but for our wedding, I want it to be truly what Kevin and I envision, not something else that we felt guilted or pressured into. Also planning-wise – dresses, flowers, photos, etc. – it’s a lot easier with fewer people involved.

Every now and then I wonder if I’ll regret not having a bridal party. Who will be at the rehearsal dinner? Who else will be in our pictures? Will I want more people to get ready with? But I think we’ll find ways to keep our friends involved without the bridal party title (i.e. having a larger rehearsal dinner, welcome drinks the night before). On the plus side, that means more time for pictures of just the two of us 😉

I’ve gotten a few mixed reactions when I tell people I’m not having a bridal party, mostly from people who have more traditional views on weddings. But I’ve learned throughout the wedding planning process, that everyone has an opinion about everything when it comes to weddings. Ultimately it’s the couple’s day, so you gotta do what feels right to you, bridesmaids or not.

And with that, I’m out to celebrate two of my most favorite people! Love you, A & R!

Let Me Escort You Into The Weekend

escort table

So my shopping didn’t go as planned last night. The dress that I ordered was a little too big, so we went to a LOFT store hoping I could exchange it for a smaller size, but no luck. I did get some cute nude embellished sandals similar to those in yesterday’s post, but I ended up going with a dress, accessories, and clutch that I already had. I guess that’s what happens when you leave things like this to the last minute!

I’m usually not a last minute kinda person. Case in point: our wedding. We just hit the year-and-a-half mark in early April, so we still have lots of time to plan. We’ve knocked out almost all of the big ticket items already – venue, caterer, band, photographer, florist – so I’m really looking forward to having plenty of time to focus on the details. My latest obsession has been looking for unique escort card table ideas. We want to do something that fits within our theme, but also hasn’t been done before. Like I said, we still have more than enough time to figure little things like this out, but that just means I have ample time to pour over  Pinterest and magazines for inspirations. Here are a few ideas that I’m loving this Friday. Have a fab weekend!

Wedding Wear

keven wedding

I can practically smell the weekend this Thursday. This weekend we’re headed up to Saratoga Springs for Kevin’s cousin’s wedding (who is also named Keven). Surprisingly, this will be our first wedding together and we could not be more excited to get our dance on. I’m excited to explore Saratoga – I hear it’s beautiful and I’ve never been. (If you have any recs, let me know!) But more importantly, the wedding is Saturday and I still don’t know what I’m wearing. After an ordering snafu with LOFT (I realized yesterday that I sent my order to my old apartment and not to our address in NJ, but LOFT offered to overnight my entire order at no extra cost – talk about great customer service!), I’m expecting this fun pink dress to arrive today. Assuming it fits well and I like it I’ll be wearing that, but I’m in serious need of some jazzy accessories. Since I’m on a pretty tight budget, I not only can’t spend a lot on any one piece, but I also want to know that I’ll get good use out of any new purchase I make. I decided a gold/neutral palette that would look great against the bright pink, but could also be worn again and again, either to work or to other upcoming weddings we have later this year. Let’s just hope the dress fits!

Jump On It

One of the things I occasionally miss about NYC is feeling the need to dress to impress. With it being just me and Kevin here in NJ and the bulk of our plans consisting of a bottle of Trader Joe’s wine and  Netflix, my after-work uniform is always some variation of sweats/leggings, a worn-in t-shirt from high school, and Birkenstocks (I recently got a pair and am OBSESSED). While I’ll never complain about watching TV and feeling comfy, I do like to get dressed up every once in a while. Our night out on the town this past weekend was the perfect excuse to trade in my Birks for heels. I got lots of compliments on my ensemble, so I figured I would share a similar spin here. Not only does the jumpsuit make a complete outfit with little effort (my kind of dressing up), but it’s also SO comfortable that you might as well be lounging with a bottle of 2 Buck Chuck. Unfortunately LOFT doesn’t sell the jumpsuit I have any more, but here are 3 other similar options that are also affordable!

Let Them Eat Cake!

It’s Friday, y’all! It was snowing again here in NJ this morning, which I’ll take as a sign that it’s going to be a good weekend. I’m working on Sunday, so unfortunately, I won’t be making any deliciously fatty foods for the Super Bowl (but here and here are some ideas!). So rather than share something like a manly buffalo chicken dip today (which I’d love to come home to on Sunday… hint hint), we’re taking it to the other end of the spectrum and talking WEDDINGS! I have a call today with our potential caterer to finalize a few things and then hopefully we’ll be own our way! Since we still have quite some time (October 8, 2016!), I’ve been having a little too much fun coming up with inspiration for our menu. Read on for what’s inspiring us on our plates and in our flutes.

1. Grand Central Oyster Bar. Kevin and I have never actually eaten here, but love the glam old school  New York vibe. We did, however, like to indulge in the $1 oysters at Bobo‘s happy hour in NYC, so hopefully some sort of raw bar will make its way onto the menu.

2. Glen Manor. Our venue! You can’t get more old school glam than that, right? And it’s on the Sakonnet River in Rhode Island – a short boat ride away from my parents’ house!

3. Naked Funfetti Cake. When we saw that our caterer Russell Morin could do a gourmet funfetti cake, we were pretty much sold.

4. Local Specialities. I love the idea of making welcome bags filled with local Rhode Island favorites, especially Kevin’s favorite: Del’s Shandy.

5. Tomato Soup & Grilled Cheese Shooters. While the decor may be glam, we’ve always been fans of unpretentious comfort food.

6. Festive Fall Cocktails. Because we love fall (and cocktails), I’m excited to come up with a speciality concoction of our own that suits the season.

7. Mini Fish & Chips. See #5 and that newspaper. ‘Nuff said.

8. Gold Flatware. I have been obsessed with gold flatware recently. I’m hoping we can work it onto our tables and into our registry eventually…

9. Ice Cream Sundae Bar. Because so many of our nights together end this way.

Bon Week-end!

Friiiiday! Since today is my only day off between this week and next, I plan to enjoy it. Tonight we’re living it up in the burbs with a night at the movies – thinking American Sniper – and dinner at P.F. Changs (I have been dying to go since we moved. After living in NYC, there’s something nostalgic and comforting about a good ol’ chain restaurant). Here are some fun links to get you ready for the weekend while you procrastinate at work today – you’ve earned it! It’s Friday after all!

In light of my post on finding your meal template earlier this week, I’m loving this no-fail lunch planning formula.

With Valentine’s Day coming up, this book that Kevin’s mom gifted us is a fun way to break away from mindless TV watching with that special someone.

haaate being hungry while working out. Fuel up with the best snacks for your workout.

Once you’re fueled up, break a sweat with one of these vintage workout videos. I “ironically” did the Paula Abdul Get Up & Dance in high school, but secretly loved it.

Allie’s post on honeymoons has me itching for a trip to the tropics with this in hand.

Will be trying this tip for all those half-finished bottles of bubbly piling up after last month’s news.

Later, Doldrums

Processed with VSCOcam with f2 preset

Hellooo, Friday! I am so ready for this weekend. Not because this week was particularly busy or stressful – if anything it was the complete opposite. I can feel the January doldrums creeping in, so I’m ready for some excitement this weekend to shake things up. Tonight we’re driving up to Rhode Island with Kevin’s mom to visit a potential wedding venue tomorrow! I never daydreamed about a wedding or any of that when I was younger, but now that we’re engaged, I have total wedding brain. For someone who loves to plan, make lists, and look at pretty things, wedding planning is totally up my alley. And to cap off the weekend, on Sunday I’m heading into the city to see two of my most favorite people, Allie and Emily. Here’s hoping you have a great weekend and keep those January doldrums at bay!
