Lady Project Summit Words of Wisdom

Apologies for being M.I.A. over the past couple days! We had a picture perfect weekend in Rhode Island, but of course hit insane traffic in the Bronx, ended up getting back later than we expected, and the past 2 days have felt like we’re playing catch-up after being away. In any case, I’m back and excited to share some AWESOME tidbits from my amazing weekend at The Lady Project Summit in Providence. This was my second summit and I was seriously impressed. Hosted at the beautiful venue The VETS in downtown Providence, big name sponsors with lots of great freebies, and free hair-styling and massages, this was my kind of networking event. But besides the great swag, snacks, and wine, I took pages and pages of notes from all of the incredible speakers and workshops. The first keynote speaker was Jennifer Romolini, the Editor-in-Chief of Zooey Deschanel’s website HelloGiggles. When she finished, it was clear that she knocked everyone’s socks off. My favorite part of her speech was her “dirty dozen” – her tips to success and happiness that she’s learned through lots of success (and some failures) along the way. Most of these you’ve probably heard somewhere before, but her story and energy made me want to get down on my knees and start worshipping her words after this. So without further ado, PREACH:

  1. Find your easy talent. Do what comes naturally to you, don’t force yourself into something you’re not or don’t like.
  2. Dream big, set your sights high, but be prepared that your dreams might change. I dealt with this one recently when I was deciding if I should leave a more unconventional career path in catering for a more corporate, conventional career path in marketing.
  3. You’re the only thing that’s holding you back. There’s a solution to every problem. I’m totally guilty of always finding something else to blame for my problems, rather than taking control of the situation.
  4. Always be hustling. Don’t be complacent.
  5. Competition and ambition are not dirty words. Don’t be afraid to ask for and get what you want! I did a FANTASTIC workshop about being assertive – something I really need to work on – I’ll be sharing more about that in the coming weeks!
  6. Get out of your own way. Don’t overthink things. Avoid drama. Don’t care about what other people think. Again, I’m totally guilty of this one.
  7. Ignore the jerks! Something I’ve definitely started to learn in the past couple years…
  8. When you’re no longer challenged it’s time to move on.
  9. Never leave money on the table. Always ask for 5-10% more than the offer.
  10. A bad boss will teach you as much as a good boss. I can definitely attest to this one, though it’s usually hard to see when you’re in it.
  11. To be a great boss, be compassionate and empathetic.
  12. Be yourself. You want genuine chemistry between you and your coworkers, not a facade you have to put on every day.
  13. Build your life resume at the same pace as your job resume. Take time away from work.
