What a great weekend! This weather, amiright??! Friday night kicked off almost exactly as I had planned, and yesterday we spent the day in NYC, which included glasses of rosé at our old favorite Bobo and brunch at Cookshop with my friend Tor. Even though it was a pretty relaxing weekend, I was still dead asleep when the alarm went off at 5:45 this morning. I’ve always been a morning person, but some days it’s just harder to get going than others – Mondays being a repeat offender. Being a natural early bird, I thought I’d share some tidbits from my morning routine that help me get up and ready, especially on days like today.
Never have I ever hit the snooze button. Seriously, never. I set my alarm to the time I need to get up not giving myself much wiggle room, so that when the alarm goes off I have no choice but to get up. Do those extra 7 minutes really make you feel more rested?
Prepare the night before. This doesn’t always happen, but as much as possible I try to get everything ready the night before: pick out my outfit, get lunch together, shower and blow-dry my hair. Having fewer things to do the next day helps my morning to feel less chaotic and rushed, which is not how I like to start my day.
Go to bed early. This is easiest for me than most since I’m usually asleep on the couch by 9, but I know if I have to be up by 6AM, the only way I’m going to feel more rested is if I get more sleep by hitting the hay earlier.
Give yourself some time to savor that cup of coffee. I try to build in an extra 15 minutes to my morning routine so that I still have time to sit, drink my coffee, blog, or watch the news. Taking some time to do something I enjoy helps me feel like I’m in control of the day, not the other way around.
Always use a lucky mug. I have 3 special mugs that I keep on rotation: one from our trip to Cinque Terre, one that Allie gave me at our annual beach weekend last year, and one from my friend Emily (as seen above). For me, I need routine in the morning because it’s comfortable, familiar, predictable. My lucky mugs act as a bright spot in my morning routine, and even though it may sound silly, they conjure up positive juju to send me out into the world.
How do you like to start your day? Any tips from you night owls to help me finally stay awake while watching movies on the couch??
