I’ve mentioned a couple times over the past few weeks that I had some exciting news brewing. I’m sure you’ve been waiting with bated breath, so here goes… today I’m starting a new job with the marketing team at McDonald’s! Before you roll your eyes or ask why I’m going to work for a fast food chain when I’m so passionate about cooking, hear me out. I’ve been thinking for a while that although I love food, I don’t love the lifestyle that comes with working in the food service industry. It can be a lot of fun, but it’s long and physically tiring work with little monetary reward or security. You may have noticed my blog posts taking a somewhat Debbie Downer turn in the past couple months – I was constantly rundown or stressed out and didn’t have much time to do the things I really love: running, cooking for leisure, spending time with Kevin and my family. Since graduating from college, I’ve struggled to find a job where I could really see myself staying for the long-term. So after doing a lot of soul-searching, I noticed a pattern in myself: I need to be somewhere with structure, career growth & security, and a good work-life balance. All of my past jobs in food – though they have each been such unique learning experiences and have introduced me to some of my best friends – didn’t have some or any of these elements. Even though I love, love, LOVE to support small, local businesses in my personal time, I’ve come to accept that maybe what I need in a career is the structure and security of a corporate company.
Now to answer “Why McDonald’s?” Well first of all, my siblings and I were practically raised on McDonald’s – 2 cheeseburgers & a vanilla milkshake for me please! (I was definitely a chubster as a kid). Emma and I could recite pretty much any McDonald’s slogan as kids, and I even asked for a McDonald’s drive-through play set from Santa when I was way too old to do so. So even though I haven’t eaten at a McDonald’s in probably 8 years up until 2 weeks ago (we were stuck in terrible traffic driving to Rhode Island and I figured it was research for my interviews!), McD’s has always held a nostalgic place in my chubby kid heart. And secondly, McDonald’s is making great strides to their menu, marketing, and healthy offerings – to make even a tiny contribution to those changes in such a massive, iconic company would be a pretty cool accomplishment to me.
So there’s the news! I still love to cook at home and prioritize healthy eating, and I’m hoping that this new opportunity will give me more energy and inspire me to continue doing those things outside of work – meaning more content for the blog! And so far, I’m definitely lovin’ it!
